The Paper Process
One day in my studio, a friend posed a simple question, "Why paper?" To my surprise, however, I had never considered this question before as it always felt like a natural choice. Upon reflecting on her inquiry, I realized my profound bond with paper dates back to my childhood. Back then, I expressed my creativity through sketchbooks and paper maché crafts. As I matured, writing in journals and tearing paper became outlets for emotional expression.
In my current artistic endeavors, the papers sourced from Nepal and Japan serve as the cornerstone of my designs. Their natural fibers, distinctive absorption patterns, and raw flexibility offer the ideal canvas. These papers possess a unique blend of resilience and whimsy, fostering a collaborative creative process rather than strict control. At times, I have chosen to handcraft my own paper to capture the energy of the project through sculpture.
Every torn paper piece, brushstroke, ink drop, and overlay contributes layers of emotion to the artwork, enabling it to tell its own story and establish a profound connection with the viewer.
I begin my work by immersing myself in the things you love, understanding their connection to you, the history behind it, and the feeling it creates. Through insightful discussions and my artistic questionnaire, I am able to gain valuable insights that lay the foundation for our creative journey together.
