The Paper Process
One day in my studio, a friend posed a simple question, "Why paper?" I took a moment to reflect, as this question had never crossed my mind before. Working with paper always seemed like the obvious option. My deep connection with it traces back to my childhood. During those early years, I tapped into my creativity through sketchbooks and paper mâché projects. As I grew older, journaling and tearing paper became vital outlets for expressing my emotions.
In my current artistic pursuits, I rely on papers from Nepal and Japan, which form the foundation of my designs. Their natural fibers, unique absorption properties, and inherent flexibility create the perfect canvas. These papers embody a wonderful mix of strength and whimsy, encouraging a collaborative creative process rather than a rigid one. Paper, in its essence, is beautifully relational, promoting a constant exchange and balance. Occasionally, I opt to craft my own paper, channeling the energy of the project into a sculptural form.
Every torn paper piece, brushstroke, ink drop, and overlay contributes layers of emotion to the artwork, enabling it to tell its own story and establish a profound connection with the viewer.
I begin my work by immersing myself in the things you love, understanding their connection to you, the history behind it, and the feeling it creates. Through insightful discussions and my artistic questionnaire, I am able to gain valuable insights that lay the foundation for our creative journey together.
